Can a Dietitian Prescribe Ozempic?

Can GLP-1s be prescribed by a Registered Dietitian?

Ozempic has become a buzzword in recent years—not just for managing type 2 diabetes, but also as a tool for weight loss. You might be wondering: If I’m working with a dietitian, can they prescribe Ozempic to help me reach my health goals?

Let’s break it down. In this article, I’ll explain what Ozempic is, how it works, who can prescribe it, and why pairing weight loss medication with nutrition counseling gives you the best chance of lasting results.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide, a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications mimic a hormone your body naturally produces (GLP-1) that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite.

Ozempic was originally developed for people with type 2 diabetes to help improve insulin response and lower blood sugar. Over time, doctors noticed an additional benefit: many patients lost weight while taking it.

Although Ozempic is not officially approved by Health Canada or the FDA as a weight loss drug, some healthcare providers prescribe it “off-label” to support weight management.

How Does Ozempic Work for Weight Loss?

Here are two main ways Ozempic supports weight loss:

  • Improved blood sugar control: By stimulating insulin release, Ozempic helps prevent spikes in blood sugar after meals.
  • Increased feelings of fullness: The medication slows digestion, which means food stays in your stomach longer. This often reduces appetite and makes it easier to be satisfied with smaller portions.

Together, these effects can lead to lower calorie intake and gradual weight loss.

Can a Dietitian Prescribe Ozempic?

The short answer: no.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are nutrition experts, but we are not licensed to prescribe medication.

In Canada, only medical doctors, nurse practitioners, or specialists like endocrinologists can write a prescription for Ozempic or other weight loss drugs.

That said, dietitians play an important role in the process:

  • We can help you determine if weight loss medication might be appropriate.
  • We can refer you to a prescribing provider.
  • We can support you with nutrition and lifestyle strategies that make the medication more effective and safer long-term.

What we can do is support you in making the medication work for you—by building a nutrition and lifestyle plan that enhances results, minimizes side effects, and protects your long-term health.

The Role of a Dietitian in Weight Loss

While medications like Ozempic can help, they are not a magic solution. Sustainable weight loss requires long-term changes in nutrition, movement, and lifestyle. That’s where a dietitian comes in.

A dietitian can:

  • Create personalized meal plans based on your health history, food preferences, and goals.
  • Ensure you’re meeting your nutrient needs (protein, vitamins, minerals) while in a calorie deficit.
  • Provide accountability and troubleshooting when challenges come up.
  • Help manage side effects like nausea by adjusting meal timing, portion sizes, and food choices.
  • Support you in building habits that last, so you don’t regain weight if you stop the medication.

Why Work With a Dietitian if You’re on Ozempic?

Here are a few key reasons:

  1. Insurance requirements
Many insurance companies want documentation of supervised weight loss attempts before covering prescriptions. Working with a dietitian may count as proof.
  2. Better results
Dietitians can help maximize the benefits of the medication by designing balanced meals that promote fullness, stabilize blood sugar, and protect lean muscle mass.
  3. Managing side effects
Common issues like nausea, constipation, or decreased appetite can be managed with dietary strategies.
  4. Preventing malnutrition
Because Ozempic reduces appetite, it’s easy to under-eat or miss out on important nutrients. A dietitian ensures your nutrition stays balanced and protective of your long-term health.

Why Nutrition Still Matters on Ozempic

Weight loss medications aren’t magic. They can reduce appetite and cravings, but they don’t guarantee balanced nutrition, strong metabolism, or long-term success. That’s where working with a Registered Dietitian makes all the difference.

At NutritionRx, I combine professional expertise with practical tools to help you succeed:

In-Depth Diet Analysis

We use a 20+ nutrient Diet Analysis Report to review your vitamin, mineral, protein, and fibre intake. This ensures you’re not missing essential nutrients while eating less on Ozempic.

Real Client Results

Many of my clients on Ozempic have achieved impressive outcomes:

  • 20+ pounds of body fat lost
  • 1–3 pounds of lean muscle gained
  • Metabolism protected while losing weight

This kind of success doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when medication is paired with the right nutrition strategy.

My Experience Working with GLP-1 Clients

Since GLP-1 medications hit the mainstream, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients using them.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • For many, GLP-1s finally quiet the constant “food noise” in their heads, making it easier to focus on living a healthy lifestyle instead of thinking about food 24/7.
  • I take a non-judgmental, supportive approach. Whether you’re considering medication or already on it, you’ll never feel shamed in my care.
  • I never “push” medication—it’s a personal choice you make with your doctor. But if you and your physician decide it’s right for you, I’ll make sure your nutrition is optimized for success.

Covered by Insurance

The good news: Registered Dietitian services are often covered by insurance under extended health benefits.

  • Many plans reimburse part or all of your sessions.
  • You’ll receive insurance-friendly receipts after each visit.
  • If you’re unsure, call your benefits provider and ask if “Registered Dietitian” services are covered.

This makes investing in professional nutrition care more affordable than you might think.
